Honoring Bus Driver for 14 years of Kindness

BOISE, Idaho (CBS2) — 

They say if you love what you do, you never work a day in your life. That’s the motto that local bus driver Robert Hoops lives by.

“It’s like not having a job, you get paid to have fun!” said Hoops.

Hoops has been driving for Boise Parks & Recreation for nearly 15 years. He says he drives around children as well as seniors to places like Redfish Lake, Shoshone Falls, Bogus Basin, McCall and more.

“I do kids camps in the summer and in the winter, I do special events all year round,” said Hoops. “I take the seniors on excursions through the Lifetime and Leisure Program and that’s a lot of fun because you get to go throughout the state a couple hundred miles.”

Boise Parks & Recreation Community Partnership Manager, Marie Haddaway, says she has loved working with Hoops for the last six years.

“You cannot be in his presence and not have a smile, he brightens up everybody’s day,” said Haddaway. “He’s great to be around, the passengers love him, the community loves him, he’s just one of the best parts of our team.”

Haddaway says Hoops has become of staple of the Boise Parks & Recreation bus excursions.

“I mean, he’s just driving a vehicle and you wouldn’t think of the driver being the attraction to where you’re going, but he becomes part of the package,” said Haddaway.

Hoops says one of his favorite parts of being a bus driver is getting to know his passengers.

“When you take these kids around, you’re being a little part of their life for that one day or one week,” said Hoops. “You see a little bit of them growing up and it’s kind of neat where you can be just a little part of their life.”
