BOISE, Idaho (CBS2) — The saying “you’re only as old as you feel” couldn’t ring more true than for Boise man Michael Kent Jones. At 74 years young, he’s recently graduated from the University of Idaho College of Law.

“I am the oldest man to graduate from law school in all of United States history,” said Jones, noting that he could only find two women older than him at the time of graduation.

Unlike the two women who attended law school at an older age, Jones actually plans to practice law. He says he took the bar exam in February and is interested in criminal work, civil rights, and animal abuse.

“I wanted what I’m going to practice to be things that would make me get out of bed in the morning and go to work,” said Jones. “I don’t need money, so that’s not going to really motivate me, but to see that justice and truth actually come to fruition in the United States.”

Jones says he hopes more people will feel inspired to pursue their passions, regardless of age.

“You’re never too old to go to school, no matter how old you are, no matter what your background is,” said Jones. “Perhaps you didn’t finish high school, well, we have GED programs, we have colleges, get a bachelor’s, you can go on and get a master’s. Nothing’s beyond anyone’s reach that’s determined.”

As a veteran coming from a long line of veterans, Jones says it’s important that people from all backgrounds consider practicing law so more groups can be better represented.

“We need more people coming in, second career-wise, coming out of the military, maybe they’ve spent a lifetime waiting tables, or they’ve been working on a farm, this is not beyond them,” said Jones. “This is something they can do.”
