IRS Online Assistance
If your individual income is less than $60,000 a year, you can file your tax return for free at the IRS website. Should you need help, the IRS provides an “Interactive Tax Assistance” (ITA) tool that walks you through various topics to help you arrive at the correct forms and inputs on your tax return. Topics include:
- How to file a deceased person’s tax return
- How to deduct charitable contributions
- What expenses you can claim as miscellaneous itemized deductions
- Whether you qualify for the credit for the elderly or disabled
- How to determine if your pension or annuity payments are taxable
If you can’t find your answers with the ITA tool, there also is the Tax Trails interactive tool that can help you walk you through answers to questions on self-employed income, tax credits, etc. Another resource is a separate IRS-affiliated website called the IRS Tax Map that collects IRS publications about various tax topics, such as adoption, rental expenses or debt cancellation, to help you file your own tax return.
